Lossy vs. lossless compression
Lossy compression (used for JPG and WEBP here) reduces file size by discarding some image data. The more you compress, the more detail is lost, but for photos the difference is often invisible until quality drops very low. Lossless compression (used for PNG) re-encodes the image more efficiently without discarding any data, so quality never degrades, but savings are smaller.
